Getting contact info for local businesses?

Anyone know how to get names and business addresses of local restaurants, stores, etc. (free or paid)?

Would it even be better to address a sales letter to the owner instead of just the name of the business?

I live in a small town so I don't think we have a local chamber of commerce but we do have our own town hall/twp. offices.

In the UK there is Yell.com that i check and thats free to use and tells you all business's in UK with address's & numbers, do you not have any local sites, council type sites with business registration info etc? Then search by area from there?

If you can't find software to scrape them, you can always sign up for MTurk and have people collect the contact info. It's pretty cheap.

An easy and FREE way is to obtain a library card from your local library (I only know this works in the U.S.). Next go to their website and you can access a whole bevy of great things like, books, audios, etc. But what's great is you have access to Reference USA! The same company behind the biggest lead gen co.'s out there like "Sales Genie!" You could find all the info you want, but they won't give you the emails for free, but at least you can find the biz owners name and anything else. It also only allows 25 downloads a day so either use a screen capture or dial for dollars as you go!

Why not just go and ask for the manager at the store? I know it's not ideal, but usually being face-to-face with someone can be much better in terms of getting info from a business.
