Does anyone know how to get Bit.ly working with the Social plugin so when you go to broadcast a post in WordPress, the Social plugin shows the Bit.ly shortlink for Twitter?

I tried using the official Bit.ly plugin and it does not work for me, using WP 3.8.1, and at the plug-in support page others are complaining of the same thing. I've tried using the Social FAQ suggestion, to use the Yoast Bit.ly shortener, bitly-shortlinks and that doesn't work either for me. I don't even get a short link.

If either of the above work for you, I'd appreciate learning about it so I can hire someone to fix this for me. If you have a different solution that works, I'd like to know. Thanks.

I figured out how to fix this. I know BHW is well indexed so if others who have this problem search on how to solve this problem they will find the solution.

To recap, the posted solution in the WP Social plugin FAQ, to use the Yoast Bitly shortener, does not work. It is broken in WP 3.8.1 and breaks WP so that the post "get shortlink" button disappears.

The official Bitly WP plugin is broken also. It does not break WP but it does not work either. Others have complained about this plugin:

The solution is to use the WP-Bitly plugin:

It uses the old legacy API, but it works great.
