Getting about 5 spam comments a minute on my blog...

OK, im not hating at all - we have to do what we gotta do - but my blog is getting an insane amount of spam comments. 99.9% of it is put in the trash - question is - what plugin do you guys recommend that blocks some of the usual 'cheap adidias trainers' comments?

PS - is it just me or is the web not insanely oversaturated with autobot comment publishing bots - are they really working?

you don't need a plugin, just set a rule to bin anything with www, http or @ in the message

Cloudflare helps a lot. After installing it, i dropped from 60k to 8k spam comments/month.

You can use Akismet or GASP plugin. These both work fine.

Assuming you have WP, I'd recommend a good Captcha for comments. I had one with a little puzzle, it's called FunCaptcha and it's free, all I know is I never got any more automated spam comments.

These solutions everyone's posted are OK I guess. They'll stop the spam, but the bots will keep hitting the page trying to post. Maybe there's a way to make an IP database of bots and block those directly via htaccess so they don't put as much strain on the server...

Probably easier to use a captcha than a database of IP addresses of bots, but im sure that works as well

This. Also does wonders for page speed time which is an influencing SEO factor nowadays. I get minimal spam with Cloudflare. No need for Akismet.

I keep the comments, but change the urls to my affiliates! It's good to keep 'em as i suspect it makes your site seem popular, etc.

I have Akismet and Cloudflare. The occasional spam comment slips through, but not many.

Good idea! I sometimes delete the URLs if the comments are pretty good.
