Ok, so I found this method out a few years back, as far as I know this is the first time anyone has disclosed this method.

Its so simple you will kick yourself.

Get a program called Xenu Link Sleuth - http://home.snafu.de/tilman/xenulink.html << thats the legit site, dont download it from anywhere else.

Then you setup Xenu to crawl Dmoz.org - Now this can take days, so try targeting categories if you want a faster result.

Once the scan stops. Any sites that returned an error are probably dropped. Or the webmaster has given up, stopped paying the hosting and will likely not be renewing the domain.

Now this can help people in many ways. If your doing your own SEO you can snatch the domain and put up a blog feeding link juice to your main site.

Or if you want you can go around the whole of dmoz, buying up all the domains and start selling niche links on various webmaster forums.

Enjoy.

I'll give this a trial.and see how well it will work for me.

LOL I have been doing this for a while myself.. There are 2 problems with this.

1) Dmoz has a tendency to drop domains from their list as soon as they are re-registered.. not sure why.

2) now that you have shared it watch how quickly dmoz ban the xenu useragent LOL!

Anyway good share.

Sounds like something I would say to stop people from jumping on the bandwaggon.

Was doing this years ago....nice to see people are still doing it. Is DMOZ still that important?

Weather it is or it isnt, many people believe strongly in DMOZ links, so its a chance for you to make money from it either way.

This method is baddass. I have tried this once before and managed to buy a couple of domains and flip them on flipper for a good profit.

No I was just giving an opinion and also sharing some info I have gleaned from doing it. I don't do it anymore as the sites I registered ended up being dropped from DMOZ anyway. Although I di get a few high value sites but if you want to find sites that are dropping and have dmoz links just go here. Much easier than xenu.

Code:

hmmm, i gave it a shot, but it spit out a ton of errors from dmoz itself when in fact they really do work. i'm mainly sifting through a ton of google directories, ask.com/searches, and dmoz links themselves...

iunno, either i'm not doing it right, or there's supposed to be a fair amount of leg work to be done.

Nice share, but that only finds dropping. not dropped

dmoz probably blocked your access temporarily based upon the number of requests from your IP, or becasue they don't like whatever user agent is being supplied to them by Xenu.

Yeah but those domains tend retain their DMOZ link and their PR!!!

The xenu method not so much. but hey give both a shot.. cant hurt.

I will give this a try..

It has always been IMPOSSIBLE for me to get listed at DMOZ.. really never knew why... never ever got a response, and I tried for the last 5 years with several sites... never ever got listed.

the same u can do with yahoo directory ????

Only problem that makes it almost impossible to find any domains there is that yahoo directory renews every year, with a paid fee..

and the whole deleting process of a domain takes like 70 days after it expired.. so the chances are very very remote and not sure if worth the time..

I found some domains in dmoz directory with this method, but they are still pending delete.. I took notes and I hope they expire so I can register them. :)

This looks like a great method. I am going to see what I can do with this. It is a shame but yeah I don't think it could be done with Yahoo as it would be hard to find those websites that have paid for their yearly fee and have been left to drop. It could be worth a try though :)
