I guess they have multiple advantages from theses freebies. First, they get more Epic Games Users, as you have to use their client to play the games. Second: Games like Civ 6 have many DLCs and they can expect people to buy them, especially becaus the game itself was free. And third point is, that they have a huge summer sale, so many people will also buy other games that are on sale than just download the free game. AND also many people will go to fortnite, because it is free and from Epic Games too.

I think it's a good marketing move from Epic Games that they gave away GTA 5, because nobody expected any publisher to do that. Most publishers only give away completely outdated games, but Epic Games had the balls to go a step further. Now they are kind of famous for that I guess.

They have been doing the weekly freebies before 2020.
