Get sales to website

Hello,
so I have a graphic design portfolio website up. Its ranking ok, fairly high but not front page. Finding it hard to generate any clients or sales through it though. Any tips or tricks to get higher traffic, better quality traffic and eventually more clients and work coming in through it?

Word of mouth is always the best method, yes. Problem is, it takes a while until you get enough word of mouth advertising, and you need to already have clients for that.

What you need to do is register on tons of freelancer sites, bid on projects and keep beefing up your portfolio. If you do good work, you'll get repeat customers and they'll even send others your way. Relying on Google for traffic to a webdesign site is a bad plan, you're up against VERY tough competition.

I started on freelance bidding sites. Its how I started in graphic design. Then I got a job in it. Im at the part of the life cycle of a designer where im thinking "If the company I work for is charging 1000 for a design, and im getting 250 a week screw that ill go it alone". I really dont want to go back to bidding sites, its false economy. I have a great portfolio, just not enough repeat high end clients yet.
