The footprint you're thinking about means to leave a trace back to your sites.

Footprints in this thread are snippets of text that are used to easily trace back to sites that have the same text on them. You use these to find sites to submit links to.
 
What kinds of services would make use of this (Besides Scrapebox). No Hands SEO has a really weird form of footprint so none of these will work on it :/
