Sorry if any of these sound stupid but it always pays to be sure! It would be more foolish not to ask as the old saying goes.

So, I have heard that when placing blog comments I should use different IPs as google can tell where the comments were placed from and devalue your efforts if they're all from the same location. Firstly, I'd just like someone to confirm that this is true.

I want to diversify my link strategy in general and place more links on forums, social media sites and sites like reddit, stumbleupon, flickr etc. Is the same true for placing links on these sites as well? Should I make sure that I use different IPs (and more specifically from a wide range of geographic locations) for each profile to maximise results?

Lastly, assuming all of the above is true, should I be careful not to change my IP too often? Ie. Will I run into problems and get flagged if I have a forum profile that has a comment placed from the US say, then an hour later from Japan?

One last thing. I want to create some 'supporting blogs' where I plan to post spun content on my niche as well as some decent original content, and the occasional do follow link to my money sites. I had planned on making most of these on sites like blogger and wordpress (NOT-self hosted). Should I create and update these using a different IP too? Will Google realise if they originate from the same IP as my money sites and devalue my links as a result?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've learnt so much from this forum already, and despite keeping up with new posts and searching I can't always find the answer to my questions. Please accept my apologies if all of this has already been covered elsewhere.

Posting blog comments from different IP's is more of a safety factor than anything else. As for micro supporting blogs, they definitely work. Especially if they are on their own domain. I don't usually like spun content... I would try to write unique content or manually re-written content.

Changing your IP is great, but don't stress about it. Tons of people get top results with a single IP.

Thanks for the reply. I just wanted to make sure before really getting started on this strategy so not to shoot myself in the foot. So you're saying you get better results with a self hosted domain but I can still get good results with a non self hosted blog like blogger/wordpress.com?

I actually have a few domains that I'm not doing anything with that I could put wordpress on. I was worried that if I were to do this google would know that they belong to me as they're hosted on the same server and all registered to my name, and devalue my links as a result. If you're saying that doesn't matter so much then I will definitely start to make use of these and probably start a few non-self hosted blogs too for good measure.

Would appreciate any additional input on this. After reading some more I guess what I propose to do is something like just having a network of tier 1, 2 & 3 sites which seems pretty common!

I have decided my strategy will include a bit of everything. Web 2.0s, blog comments, forums, directories, profile links. All built slowly and naturally. I just don't want to waste time covering my tracks and worrying about IP diversity where it isn't actually necessary.

Also if anyone has any insight into how strong a link is from a self hosted site vs say a blogger site that would help me out. Or does it really just depend on that particular page's PR and relevance, not so much how it's hosted.

If you use 1 IP, you'll eventually get that IP blocked by Akismet, that's the reason why most people use multiple IP's.

Ok great thank you. Well I have been using TOR and have been really careful about my IP so far when doing anything (signing up new email accounts, google accounts, forums, web 2's etc just to be on the safe side) After doing some more reading I understand that I should be fine to make use of my other domains that aren't currently doing anything and that are hosted on the same server as my money sites, as long as I make sure they aren't all interlinked heavily.

And no I am not using scrapebox and have no plans to in the near future. Should I?
