Generating Backlinks for Client - How to protect myself

Hello,

Im about to do some work for a SEO customer who wants me to get a easy to target keyword up to the top of Google.

How can I protect myself if they decide not to pay me? Someone has mentioned previously using a redirect or something can anyone give me any more info?

Just face it dude - in your time it is going to happen sooner or later!

All this redirect stuff does/can work but will that make up for the time lost ?

Just get a contract, take a deposit and hope for the best - 3 reasons you wont get paid

1: You ran blackhat and didn't tell your client
2: You lie, get behind or are not honest with your client
3: Last but least, either you or your client is a shit
 
Buy a domain, aged if possible and build all the backlinks to that domain. Do a 301 redirect to your client's domain. Your client will get all the link juice. If they choose not to pay you, then stop the 301 redirecting and your client will lose everything. If you dont know how to do 301 google it.

Interesting. Can anyone back this method up? Would like to get a second opinion on this.

If doing profile links could OP just change the url in the profiles? That sounds like another idea.
 
I usually get a "setup fee," which acts as a deposit. Contracts will protect you as well. You can also build bad links to screw up their site. (adult, gambling, etc).

You're better off with the contract though.

If you don't know what a 301 is then i would seriously stop saying your a seo

I ranked a client for a longtail word using a 301. About 10 days ago I pointed the 301 to another client. For the past week both pages have been on page 1. I'll be interested in seeing how long they both stay...

I know what a 301 is. The op doesnt. I dont think i have to spoon feed anyone, especially if the info can be gathered with a 2 second google search. However, instead of bashing him i still pointed him at the right direction by answering his question. I don't like posting links on here because the sites that tell you how to do it have affiliate links on them. And i am sure he is capable of going on google and typing "what is a 301 redirect".
 
I have a clients I do SEO for, although I admit im a web designer by occupation. With that said I speak from experience when i say NEVER start a job without a contract and a deposit. I dont start work on ANY project without a signed contract and money upfront...
 
I wouldn't count on a 301 as a threat. I wouldn't threaten at all, it's bad for business.

Take payment upfront on a monthly basis, get a solid contract, offer refund for any time remaining in the month should they decide to cancel. Take a non-refundable setup fee for any initial costs you incur.

If they cancel your services, make sure it's on good terms. The testimonial and referrals could mean your next six clients.

You need to get your clients into a contract and require them to put money upfront.

For the contracts, there are quite a few products shared in here that have a template for it.
 
Buying your own domain name, then backlinking it and then doing a 301 redirect is the best way to go, that way you own the domain name and the client can't just say they don't need you anymore once they've ranked and stop paying you. If they do stop paying, you can then use that domain for their competition :)

Which ones? Anyone have links to these?

My other question is could I build backlinks to a domain without actually having anything in that domain? I have some spare domains I never used and has nothing on it so i was wondering could I just do scrapebox blasts on it and use it as a 301 redirect?

That was aimed at the OP - Backing up your comment, maybe I could have made that clearer
 
Really depends on how much work is required, and the overall costs.
301's dont pass 100% link juice OR anchor text, so it will be harder to rank via a 301 than direct links.
Also, unless this is some tiny job your client is probably going to want to see some evidence of your work, beyond the rankings alone.

Provided you get a deposit and contract, and do the work as promised, then their is little point worrying about being scammed. I mean if you feel every client is a potential scammer, you need to take a long hard look at your lead gen techniques!
 
Neither me or my staff work for anyone for free. With SEO it is always 100% pay in advance. Its like going to the fair, nobody gets on this ride without buying a ticket first.

This is 100% false. 301s pass the majority of the juice and more importantly they also pass the anchor text. I do the same thing - rank my own 301, point it at the client. If the client decides he wants to rank another page or doesn't pay, I just point it to the new site. A week or two later the new site ranks up and the old site drifts down.

I can't disagree with getting a good contract and a good client though!
