General topic forums VS dedicated forums?

what type of forums will work best for search engines? and what is the SEO theory regarding this?

I mean a dedicated forum to a specific idea, niche , ..etc say for example BMW cars

or a general discussion forum that can hold everything

forums are quite different than others types of sites , they are even crawled different , anyway always '' specific niche '' sites it's normal to be favorite ..... for example you have some domain with some health related keyword building a forum about this and start a tread about bmw cars ... it's normal to not have too much chances you got the point right ?
