After looking at Market Samurai and Traffic Travis, the number 1 website on for my niche has around 1200 backlinks. The kicker is that ZERO of the backlinks are 100% keyword specific.

for example, my keyword is a 3 word longtail. The number 1 site only contain the first 2 words. (German Shepherd Dog vs German Shepherd) - no, that's not my keyword, just showing what I'm talking about.

My question is - am I being beat by the sheer volume of links because #1's keywords MOSTLY match the longtail?

My site seems permastuck around page 2 and 3 and everything seems to point that my on and offsite SEO is fine. I'm thinking just not near enough links.

Let me get this straight. What you're trying to say is that this website is not fully targeted for your target keyword and is a more general form of it. It has a lot of links with diverse anchor text. Am I right? If you can also tell me the number of links you have, I could help you determine what's wrong.

It may not be just the links, it could be domain age, pr. If his site is about all kinds of dogs, and your site is about the german shepherd only then you should be able to beat him with good anchor text backlinks. I'm sure way less then 1200. But if his site has been there for awhile and has valuable content then you may have a hard time.

The NO. 1 site just have 1200 links..
I think the domain may have 3 years old or more and at least pr 3.
Now you need valuable content and more backlinks(2k or more) and about 4-6 months' time to get rank first.

Yeah, the top 10 are almost all pretty aged domains, thankfully, many in the top 10 are shopping sites like Amazon, Walmart, etc. (like I said - German Shepherd was just an example).

Anyway, I just checked my own backlinks. I thought I had more than I did. I guess some of my profile links have been deleted, etc. I have nowhere NEAR enough to overtake the top 10.

So I believe you're right. Time and a crapload more backlinks.

Thanks everyone for your input. :D
