Hi,

For a local business with limited budget where would you put more effort first Google Business Profile or the website?

I'm trying to keep things simple instead of doing everything at once.

Thanks in advance.

If the budget is limited, at first I would like focus on Google business profile, it helps you show up Google maps and searches, which can bring customers faster. Once that's optimized, put some money into a simple, professional website, so first priority is GBP then second one website

Website!! I’ve seen many niches in local SEO and rank n rent, where websites without a GBP were still ranking in the top 3 organically, purely through strong SEO and quality content.

you kind of need both to make either work well these days. gbp gets you fast leads but without a website linked to it, your map rankings will struggle in any decent niche. just get a cheap domain, throw up a single page lander with your NAP on it, and link it to the gbp. takes an afternoon and costs pocket change. then put 90% of your daily effort into optimizing the map listing and getting reviews.

GBP first, no question. for a local business with limited budget it drives the most direct calls and visits with the least effort.

For GBP, you need to fill out every blank there, and it will be almost optimized. You just need to put effort into getting reviews.

For the website, that where you need to put more efforts and budget. You need to create proper URL structure, content, interlink them, service pages, location pages, and then create citation and local backlinks.

I personally spend more effort on the website because a properly optimized website will rank you in no time if the competition is low.

For a local business, I would start with the GBP because it can bring visibility and calls faster, especially for local searches. But I would not ignore the website completely. A well-optimized website supports the GBP and gives Google more context about the business.

How about, say, for a website that's actually about a town, rather than a specific business within a town? Do you think in that situation there could be a case for making a product of costs (say a town guide), for the same of creating a Business Profile off the back of that?

My suggestion is on my experience if you have limited budget then put 70% of your budget is on GBP and remaining 30% of your budget is on website SEO.

Sounds like a fair split. Often in restaurants and the like i'm specifically asked if i'm give them a review on Google, so it basically speaks to the importance and their influence compared to other platforms.
