My gallery site is currently using a lightbox to view images. I know this is bad for SEO, but the social media options are nice. To improve upon my site's SEO, I'm considering 2 options:

  • Button (eg. "Separate view") that when clicked, the lightbox thumbnails instead link to a new page with the caption as the title (and perhaps a second caption under the image for maximum SEO). A lot of TPGs seem to be doing this (but without the option to switch between lightbox/separate window), but I'm having difficulty in finding a good plugin for the job. The regular lightbox view would be de-indexed from robots.txt.
  • "Thumbnail view" button which simply displays captions under the existing lightbox thumbnails. The regular lightbox view would again be de-indexed from robots.txt.
Would the first option be best for SEO? Any recommendations for plugins that could be suitable for either of these? Which would be easiest to implement? Any other options to improve gallery SEO?

You don't want things hidden behind clicking javascripted buttons, you ideally want it ON PAGE so that Google knows its useful content. I'd just redesign the pages to have your lightbox gallery on the top and then below have HTML content and even a smaller strip of thumbs. There may not be an "easy" fix that doesn't involve you overhauling your page. And if you have the cash, just changing over to an HTML5 website with gallery would be great.

Doesn't Google favour content at the top of the page, and wouldn't on-site SEO suffer from the duplicate content? I don't mind overhauling the page as long as the processes behind it are relatively simple. Wonder if there's a better work-around that doesn't involve JavaScript then
 
Don't sites that have the option to change the text language utilise a similar feature (if the URL remains unchanged)? Another option is to have a large "Start Slideshow" button above each gallery to open the lightbox and have the thumbnails link to separate pages with the image + caption. Any thoughts/suggestions?
 
Can anyone point me in the right direction here?
