Alright this my seem pretty fundamental to a lot of you. Quite an SEO noob so would appreciate some advise in this area.

Assume the following:
Niche - mobile phones
Pages involved - Homepage and another inner page dedicated to portable chargers
External links to the portable chargers inner page - Several exact match anchors (for the term "portable chargers") and variations of it

Now if my objective is to rank my Homepage for the term "portable chargers", am I correct to say that the best way to pass link juice will be to do an internal link with anchor "portable chargers" from the internal page to the Homepage?

Please advise.

yes, you also need an external anchor text links pointing to your homepage such as "mobile chargers", "portable phone charger", "charger for mobile" etc.
diversify your anchor text related to the main keyowrd

Is there a reason you're trying to rank the root rather than an inner page for the keyword? If you go to Google and search the keyword then look at the SERPS and look at what Google is ranking for that term. If it's mainly inner pages then you'll want to target an inner page. If it's the root then I'd advise you to go after the root in that case. If you want to do it any way and hit the root then you can start by following the advice above.

Thanks for the advice, very good information. I do appreciate it.

Thanks a lot too. Built links to inner pages with the intention of making my link profile look as natural as possible. Soon after, realized that there some fairly decent ones pointing to this "portable chargers" page. Hence the reason for wanting to transfer link juice to the Homepage.

Why not just rank the inner page?
But yes, if you want to rank homepage link to it from inner page.

Be careful with your anchor text diversity though - sounds to me like you might be over optimzing those anchors.

Yes you got a point, but there're already "portable charger" backlinks to the Homepage and it is already on page 3. Hence, rather than going through the trouble to rank the inner page, I think it'd be a better idea to use that to further power the Homepage and bring it to page 2 or something.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong but Homepages tend to be easier to rank as compared to inner pages?

Better go with your homepage because you're already ranking on the third page.

Instead of pointing to your external links to inner page point your links to Homepage. You should create related articles on your Inner page and create interlink related to home that will also increase the relevance of your site.

Not trying to be a smartypants but where is the evidence that ranking the homepage is easier than an inner page. My mentors say the exact opposite?

Is your inner page in your navigation or is it linked by internal anchor text?
