[FUN] TOP Epic Fails in SEO !!

Make website, get it to #1 for main keyword. After that it naturally doubles in number of visitors every year for 3 years without any SEO done by me. Nice amount of money each month. Ends up in top 3 best sites on the topic.
Make 2nd website on same host/ip, grow it to #1 for main keyword (related/complementary to first site).
Make several sites with unique content (some on same IP some on other IPs) and interlink everything. Have them also under same Analytics account.

At the begining of this year, the first 2 sites which were the only one making money + one of those support sites get penalized by a -50. Profit drops from $2500/mo to $200/mo. The sites are high quality and I don't see a reason for them being penalized but if they wouldn't have been on same IP and Analytics, maybe one would have survived.

Lesson: don't interlink your money sites in the same niche and stay away from Google's services.

Indexing a $300 website project with a typo in the description and main keyword.

Cost me a a few weeks to get it crawled and indexed properly.

Somehow i always thought the bad rankings afterwards was due to this since it should be not of a problem to rank it page one within a month normally.

Dropped the project a few months later...

Ow well... Will never happen again lolz :D

registered centafold.c*m thinking people might mistype centerfold. Anyway 0 people mistyped it LOL. It's available if anyone wants it :)

I think that domain would do well with pics of very good looking black girls. Think about how the black community drops the R from most words.

Disclaimer: I'm NOT being racist with this. Just pointing out the obvious.

BTW... I take it if you no longer want it. :)

how did/do you monetize this traffic?
I had a site that was getting 300 visits a day from Russia, but I tested and tested a bunch of ways to monetize it that all failed. after about 6 weeks the traffic was gone. no money earned.

I put a cpa banner, made $100 in a few months, from 70-80 daily visitors, and it's a blogger blog....
As majority of searches were from Turkey and my blog is english I was getting for first few weeks only 100-150 daily visitors.
And I think there are much better ways to monetize them, but I'm too lazy )))

It's hard to monetize russian traffic....

Basically emptying my bank account on a whole bunch of awesome sounding, dead-on .CO's (at $30/each). Mainly brands, that are definitely trademarked.

Tried to sell them all on ebay in individual domain auctions, then all in one pack, and finally ended up selling 1 for $6. The rest just expired.

Be my guest. I owned it for quite a while and did nothing with it. Hope you make it a success.

not quite SEO but I bought 'mazondvscom.com' instead of 'mazondvs.com' felt pretty stupid after I had bought it and kept trying to visit the site and it not working...then I saw the fail LOL

Ranked on #1-#5 on all major search engine with a 1 week old domain for a keyword of 40k+ exact search and was pulling some serious $$ from adsense before I tried to make it more stable by making some more backlinks. Ordered 2 gigs at Fiverr of Scrapebox and Xrumer and now my site is nowhere.....lol

A member on here was releasing an IM product on CB and was looking for people to promote it, so I jumped on a domain and ranked in the top 1 or 2 spots for the product name keyword and product name review keyword....product never took off apparently because I never got a sale.

My bad for promoting my site instead of the product...so, not much help to either of us.

I just did a google keyword check and it gets 12 exact searches per month

Damn, i got the board/exact problem too when I created my site. I thought i hit the goldmine.

Couple of years ago I worked 2 weeks to spam forums and ranked on the 1st page for "p*nis enlargement pills", the next day I was nowhere (penalty) :)

This one is sort of epic failure. I am ranking #3-6 for the main keywords I want. I get good traffic every day. I do not get calls on the business line as I should had got.
SEO worked, but customers are not calling which I feel is EPIC Fail. :P

I ranked for a keyword that had 500,000 global searches a month, but only 100 locally. I thought "local" was referring to my hometown...not my entire country....

.

Same thing here.. I still make that misstake some times, but I always make sure to doublecheck if the numbers look way to good :)

As everyone here... BROAD killed me :)) 50k with BROAD ticked and with exact 200 :)) so epic fail....

It was on reputation management,i tried to derank one keyword that was "client name + arrested" but i made the titles on my blog network posts with the "name + arrested" but it was not for rank the blog posts it was just to send juice to other pages but some days later there was thousands of blogs with the title "Client name + arrested" inclusive on the first page.

The client was like "Wtf" ?

some years ago I bought an indian "google groups"-group with 250k members for 80$
after 3 days the seller recovered his group and left me alone with no admin rights at all :D

OMG. I can totally relate. My SEO bad (that has happened on many occasions) is not optimizing description/title correctly and then having to wait weeks for index to update with correct info. :) I learned from that mistake.

Another epic fail was that i purchased an exact match .net domain for a kw that has currently 110,000 global monthly exact searches. 90,000 local. I let the domain lapse and expire because at the time I didn't know how to rank it properly to how to find out what geo location the traffic was actually coming from. I'm kicking myself for that.

Ok ok as there are very hot fails, I'll dare to reveal one of the worst ever.

Remember wikileaks time, it was crazy.

I ranked 1st top google on Lassange, and was wondering why the hell, google wanted me to correct it.

During a meeting (LeWeb10) i even asked a google representant why does google censure Julien Lassange :D

It was Assange -_-

Still i got many queries from it :p
