I've been doing internet marketing for about 5 years will the goal of ultimately making a shitload of money (yeah, we marketers aren't running non-profits, if you aren't in it for the money good for you but I think we all know why we are here...)
It's been a crazy ride from being a full time college student with 2+ jobs at any given time (and teaching private music and swim lessons), a social life, and trying to make money online. I was constantly broke even though I worked more hours than anyone I knew. I wasted lots of time with SEO and free traffic methods such as article marketing, video marketing, content locking, blogging, and a lot of other shit that never made me much money.
Eventually I figured out that affiliate marketing with paid traffic was where it was at, and in addition to being the most lucrative, it was also the most interesting. Where else can you spend some $ and have hundreds or thousands if visits to a website by the next day? I was stoked to get started... but I had barely $50 cash at any given time. So yeah it was a rocky road but I dedicated myself to learning and progress every day.
I took on more jobs and started doing stuff to earn extra money to invest in paid traffic (2+ jobs, lessons, and more). Losing $50 a week on traffic for years taught me to analyze everything and build technical skills. At that time I didn't know this business was about social and networking as much as it was about the tech side. I did manage to have some profitable campaigns here and there and even got lucky on a campaign that made me $5k profit in a week before the campaign died. It would be 1.5 years till I made that much money (in that timeframe) again.
After college I got a real job and finally had a (somewhat) decent budget for traffic. At least I could afford my rent and pay for tracking and forum memberships (which are essential to speed up your success!) and have a little left over for traffic without going broke.
Before this becomes chapter 1 of my new book (just kidding lol) I'll finish the story. After a year at my job and more small profits from aff marketing I met a friend of a friend who was also an affiliate, I quit my job, we joined forces, and I finally became a full time internet marketer. Neither of us had sustained a full time income from affiliate marketing on our own, and after a rocky start of losses or breakeven for 6 months, and almost going broke, we started seeing progress.
It's now been a year since I quit my job and I'm not broke anymore
Not out of the trenches yet either, but its the consistent effort and risk taking that will get me, you (and anyone who follows the formula laid out in countless books, blogs, articles, studies, forums...), to where we want to be.
