So have this website which was ranking on the top page in the top 3-4 for all my important search terms. I was away on holiday and domain expired. It was still held by the registrar. Godaddy was the registrar and they took down the site, and put a parked page.

When I got back I paid for them domain and site went automatically live the next day... but all my rankings have gone to shit. ie. traffic is down to a third (at best ) of what it was .

When a domain expires. is it posisble this could have lost me domain age? I can think this is the only reason it could be so bad. Can somebody explain to me more about loosing domain age with brief lapses in domain registration....

    what a fuck up.

Your help would be much appreciated in anyway

Maybe Google spidered your site when the parked page was up so it would have seen that your content was not there and is consequently not ranking you for it, if that is the case then just wait to be spidered again - I'm sure you could check if it was this from webmaster tools. Just a thought.

It's not domain age that is the problem.

Google has simply flagged your website as having changed it's content and begun adjusting it's rankings accordingly.

In all honesty, you're going to have to sit it out and it will come back again.

My suggesting is to begin building specific anchor text backlinks t specific pages that way Google gets a clear signal what pages are supposed to rank for what keyword. It will help it along.

Another thing you will have to do now is add some new content and ping it (if it's not on Wordpress).

You must get the spiders back to your site as fast as possible.

I agree... while you are waiting it out, add more content, ping, etc...

As above...add content whether it's a blog or not. Hang tight and you will be back where you were.

Agree with the comments above, though I would also say that you need to add fresh content - don't play around with or tweak your existing pages, Google has already visited your site and not found what it expected, you don't want to continue any uncertainty.

    Hi

    Thanks for your advise

the site hasnt recovered despite me implementing what you guys have said. I know it hasnt been long but something feels very wrong. Google has spidered teh site again for sure as when you search for the domain name you can see its show the original Title and meta text in the search result - not that of the parked page.

    Still no recovery of rankings.

    1. Is it possible ive lost domain age? Does anybody know if htats possible?
    2. I did a search on domain tools and it says "2 registrars with 1 drop" Could this be the cause of the problem - the drop? (which was only 2-3 days) and the fact it says 2 registrars is a concerning as i have been the only registrar of the domain from the start..

    please help

    THANKS

Keep at it. You need time to recover. It probably took you months to get your SRP and it will take weeks before you recover. SEO is more a marathon than a sprint.

If you want to get back online fast try a cheap Adwords campaign. It's funny how I have found this a good way to get ranked or reranked as in your case. Nothing crazy, spend a few dollars for a few days and Google will embrace you once again.
