How I Decided to Enter the Adult E-commerce Niche and What I Encountered

At the end of 2023, I already had experience in e-commerce and decided to test a new niche—an online adult shop. My logic was simple:
  • It’s a growing market, especially in e-commerce.
  • High average order value.
  • The ability to operate via dropshipping without significant investments in inventory.
I wanted to jump into this niche right during the hot sales seasonBlack Friday, Christmas, and New Year’s, when overall shopping activity is at its peak. The idea seemed logical: if people are actively spending money, why not offer them our products?

I already had a Shopify store, selected products, and started testing advertising on ExoClick. I chose ExoClick due to my considerable experience working with this ad network since 2018, when I was involved in other projects.

I focused on the USA, the UK, and Australia. Why these countries? To avoid the language barrier, simplify creative production, and not invest significant funds in translating the website into other languages.

First Failure: How to Burn Through $2,000 Quickly

In November 2023, I launched ads and very quickly went $2,000 in the red. December was slightly better:
  • Revenue: $2,839.50
  • Advertising costs: $2,748
  • ROI: 3.3%
So, I nearly broke even, but after deducting other expenses, I was still at a loss.

First Mistakes:

  1. Incorrect audience selection. A portion of the budget was wasted on segments that didn’t convert.
  2. Unoptimized website. I didn’t account for the fact that trust in the brand plays a significant role in this niche and that much more time needed to be spent improving product pages.
After the holiday season, I decided: I need to dig deeper.

What I Improved in 2024

Throughout 2024, I made many different attempts to launch ads. I used ExoClick, TrafficFactory, and Google Ads.
The ads were targeted at three countries: USA, UK, and Australia.

I conducted an analysis, redesigned the website, and started looking for a more specific target audience. Several approaches were tested:
  1. Testing new ad networks: The main problem in the adult niche is bots. I learned how to deal with this issue and eventually settled on ExoClick due to its optimal combination of price and quality.
  2. Testing different audiences. I settled on a male audience and completely stopped experimenting with female targeting.
  3. Optimizing the product range. I had to spend significantly more time on pricing and product selection, which eventually led me closer to profitability.
In the summer of 2024, I decided that working with influencers was necessary. I chose the X.com platform, compiled a database of influencers, and offered a 21% commission on each order as an incentive.

Over three months, about 90 influencers from a database of 30,000 joined the program. Many of them had an audience of over 300,000 followers.

The result? Just one sale worth $59.9, despite significant spending on software and a hired employee.

Influencer Marketing Failure: 90 Influencers, 1 Sale

I was sure influencer marketing would give a powerful boost, but…

✅ 90 affiliates joined ✅ Total reach — millions of views ❌ Sales: 1 sale worth $59.9

Why was this a failure?
  • The influencer audience on X.com are not buyers. Most of them are freeloaders, not actual customers.
  • A warmed-up audience is required. People don’t buy on impulse—they need to be nurtured. The 21% commission turned out to be a weak incentive for influencers.
  • There is potential for working with bloggers. However, it requires creating a knowledge base and providing step-by-step instructions on how they can attract clients via their referral link and earn commissions.

Further Testing and the Main Dilemma

At the end of 2024, I started testing small budgets and narrow audiences, which resulted in slight profitability.

I clearly identified the audience, GEOs, creatives, and products that could be sold at break-even or slight profit, but by that time, I had even more questions:
  1. Is it worth continuing if the business doesn’t generate stable profits?
  2. There are several competing dropshipping sites that operate without stopping. This means their business model works. Where did I make a mistake?
I realized that paid traffic (PPC) benefits large players, who already have an optimized business model.
Throughout the entire project, I analyzed all competitors using paid traffic, but I never found a definitive answer to my question:
"How do they survive?"

Key Lessons and Takeaways

Over the past year, I learned more about marketing in the adult business than I ever imagined. Here are my main takeaways:

✅ Adult e-commerce is not traditional e-commerce. The mechanics are different, customers are more cautious, and privacy is crucial.
✅ PPC advertising in this niche is more complex than it seems. Google Ads frequently bans such ads, requiring skillful campaign optimization. Niche networks like ExoClick have high bot traffic, making conversion rates unpredictable.
✅ Influencer marketing might not work. The audience must be highly relevant, or else you’re just paying for reach without sales.
✅ Dropshipping in the adult segment is ineffective. Repeat purchases are nearly impossible, and margins are lower than expected. However, return rates are much lower than commonly believed.
✅ SEO and content are long-term strategies. After stopping paid ads, the SEO channel began growing, which means organic traffic could bring long-term results.

What’s Next?

The project is currently on hold, but I am developing SEO and alternative traffic sources to establish sales without relying on paid advertising. However, my motivation to work on this business has significantly declined, and it has become a low-priority project.

❓ What would I do differently if I launched an adult shop again?
  1. Location matters. The best option is to live in the country where you sell. I currently live in Turkey, and building a business with logistics in major markets from scratch is very difficult, especially financially.
  2. I would build a brand, not just a dropshipping store. Trust is everything. Again, if location allowed, I would seek local partners and create a full-fledged business with inventory, branding, and better customer service.
  3. A $20,000 budget is too small for a business competing with giants like Lovehoney, Adam&Eve, Lelo, and even Amazon. Perhaps I should have considered raising investments.
There were many experiments, audits, and so on. I tried to describe my case concisely while keeping the major factors in mind.

Most of the financial data can be seen in screenshots showing the number of orders, revenue, and ad expenses.

Expenses:

  • ExoClick: $11,786
  • Other ad networks: $2,000
  • Affiliate program: $1,800
  • Other expenses: ~$5,000
CPS (cost-per-sale) - $50
Best CPS after all optimizations - $18

I’d love to hear your feedback to understand where I went wrong in your opinion.

Yes, your ads weren't very effective, but that's logical since you used third-party services that have a lot of bots in them

The best way is to use Facebook ads, but there are limitations there, so you need to find someone who knows how to bypass moderation.

You also need to install a pixel on your site to bypass moderation so that the pixel collects information about paid orders on your site. Then your business will become completely white labeled and will definitely start making profits. Trust our experience we have done quite a few projects with adult toys

After working with ExoClick, do you have any tips for filtering bots? Do WL spots stay green for long on ExoClick? I recently tested ExoClick for my dating smartlink, but I see it's really tough to get green. The money runs out too quickly.

did you try trafficjunky? am wondering which one is good for promoting some CPA offers?

Honestly, it sounds like you learned a ton, even if the ROI wasn't there. Maybe focus on SEO and content, build up that organic traffic, and then revisit paid ads later with a stronger brand. Ever thought about focusing on a specific sub-niche within the adult space to stand out?

Do you sell small products like vibrators or big products like doll?
Focus on seo is better, keep adding content and build links

I tried TrafficJunky, Exoclick and many other PPC platforms. TrafficJunky also gives me sales, but much less than Exoclick. I used Adspy services to make analytics more easier + manual research.

So my conclusion is that the largest websites give the best results and there less bots.(xvideos, pornhub) You need to choose device types and bidding amounts more strictly. I used Smart CPM and I got success with a bid $0.023, but when tried $0.06 I got worse results. So ranking, competition and how much time you show 1 ad for the customer - all make sense.

Yes, all this time - there were experiments. For myself, I realized that only a strong brand and SEO will help to give real profit. It is very difficult to attract traffic through porn - a female audience, and there is the most money there.

I sold products for men - masturbators and related products, even sex dolls.

Great Journey, Thankyou for the insights on the metrics of Adult online shops.

Work with SEO for better visibility of the site in search engines. And regular link building. Together, this should increase your sales and ranking

There is a chance that SEO will actually give results, but after 1+ years of failures, the motivation is not the same, and the focus is on other projects.
Thanks for your message, it motivates me.
