Hi!

I was thinking about what's the best way of earning money with SEO and what I've found is that it's client SEO.

At the moment I'm not really good at WH SEO but I'm learning fast.

I'm talking to the Freelancer SEOs here:
Is it worth getting into Freelancing as a SEO or is there a better way to make money with it?

If it's worth it: Should I learn Black Hat or White Hat?

Thanks!

I wouldn't call the SEO I do "freelancing", but you can certainly make great money working for clients. The real challenge, at least for me, is getting those clients as most people have either never heard of SEO (very common; this will make them wonder why they should pay for it), have had a bad experience with SEO (common; these people are traumatised by the bad experience and will refer to it as 'snake oil'), or they're already taken by another SEO specialist/company.

Also, learn both "black hat" and "white hat" SEO. White hat SEO is really just following the Google Webmaster Guidelines, which will show you how to rank a website "the right way" and learning the tricks used in black hat SEO will provide you with a better understanding of how others manipulate the search engines, that way you're not surprised when a churn and burn site outranks your website.

Thanks for your answer!

I was also thinking about coldemailing and coldcalling smaller companies.

We are all doing SEO to make money, right?
I'm just trying to find the most efficient way to do so.

Affiliate Marketing is a little slow based on my research.
Client based seems the best.

I usually receive my clients through referrals (you can also pay people a commission for recommending you), although on Monday I'm going to start cold e-mailing self-employed individuals in my area for the first time in an attempt to bring in new clients. The referral method by Taktical is what I was using before, so I suggest reading through that thread.

Affiliate marketing can be a reliable source of income (I'm no longer active with affiliate marketing, but I occasionally receive some revenue from some old spammy affiliate sites I set up a couple of years ago).

Learn SEO and then grab projects from your clients.
BE different with SEO tactics.

Why not learn both methods if you can? It will take a bit to learn as things are changing, but I would say that it would be worth it to be a freelancer doing SEO.

Personally, if you get good at SEO - you'd be better off doing it for yourself.

Not many people are willing to spend what you could make doing it for yourself.

Do you go through all the legal stuff? Like getting clients to sign up to contracts ect?

I do everything legally to avoid problems later; I have them sign contracts (especially if the work is long term) and I fill out their W-2 forms.

SEO for clients is really a big challenge & competition.

You should learn both Black & White Hat SEO.

If you know good SEO, you can do both work for clients & work for your self.

i also think that better work for yourself if you very good in SEO, you exactly will earn more money
but if you novice, then of course beter receive experience on clients sites :)

Without having read all the replies above, SEO can be very lucrative and there is still a massive amount of businesses and people who either don't know about it or they hear "SEO" and lose their minds because they think it's magic. It can be very profitable but I would implore you to be a quality SEO consultant (i.e. not like the majority of SEO consultants) because the people you will be doing work for will likely have no way of knowing how good a job you really are doing.

But if you're only a novice at SEO - why would someone hire you?

Just some food for thought is all.

If you are smart, creative and ready to work then why not. It will take time of course but it is worth it. Learn everything that you can get. There is no extra knowledge in our life ;-)
