I would like to offer my web development / design services to people. It seems freelancer.com is over-saturated with freelancers that are under-paid.

If you know of a great freelancer website please post it up!

Where do you live?

If your in a western country you will be better off building a site and targeting local terms.
People who use major freelancer sites know the going rate, and its not very good.

If your not in a western country, you may be better off trying to partner with a westerner and doing the same.

How much do you want to charge and what is your skill set / level?
Is it just using open source cms or could you write a cms in php/asp etc if required?

I have UK clients, but i prefer to work on SEO than programming, so work with freelancers from elance etc often, but i try to stick with one or 2 guys when i find good ones.

Visit businesses in your community and offer them your service. Alternatively, you can research businesses in other areas with a poor website and provide your service to them. Both of them will require more human interaction than in Freelancer.com, however the rewards are much greater.

Odesk and Elance would be the two obvious ones. You can also go to the hire a freelancer section here and look for things you can do.

Freelancer, elance, odesk are mainly for first world countries to outsource
to third world countries.
That is why the pricing is low and the competition for work is high.

The best are freenlancer, elance, mturk , and odesk.

Odesk is the best of All. When you got have got your position there, it means your position is secured.
