I would like to tell you what it's happening in my country today :)

I live in a small country that is named Catalonia. We have been a part of the Spanish kingdom since the 15th century, but with our own institutions. But 300 years ago, there was a war to decide the heir and they own, so we lost our self-determination. Since them, Spain has tried to destroy our culture and our language and absorb us, but we have remained.

And since some decades ago, the need for self-determination has been growning in our people, because we think that it would be better for us. Now it isn't only a cultural subject, it also economical because 20% of the taxes we pay each year to Spain never return.

Last September there was a manifestation in our capital city with more than a million people asking for the independece. After that, our president called elections with the purpose of making a referendum about independence if there were a majority of independent parties after that. These elections are being today, so I'm very excited about it.

We don't want antagonize with Spain. We only want our freedom, to be another country in Europe. I hope we will get it soon.

Inf you want, you can get more information in this video:

PD: I'm sorry for my bad English if something is wrong.

How will being part of a different government benefit you financially?

He mentions in his article that 20% of the taxes he pays goes back to Spain, not to his own country.

And what if the tax rate of the new nation is higher then when they are part of Spain? And just because they are a tax donor in aspects of funding for roads and healthcare etc. doesnt mean that they are actually going to be better off as a independent country.

For example Texas loses 6% of their taxes to the USA,but if they became independent they risk losing military bases with hundreds of thousands of people being redeployed. As well as texas companies losing government contracts. This is not part of the tax donor stats that Texans like to tell you.

Catalonia will not be a member of the Schengen Agreement,EU,as well as Euro Zone.

It's not only an economy subject, as I said. If being in Spain gives us something good, it'ss in exchange for destroying our culture.

For example for years children didn't study our language in schools. Or spanish goverment don't promote our local festivities in media, don't talk about our history too. And spanish people come here to work and refuse to integrate because "they are in Spain", so they don't have to change anything.

    Ets catalĂ ?

I would prefer join another country's ligue. If Spain doesn't want us, I'm sure that Premier Ligue or Calcio should be happy to welcome us.

So you want to force an old culture for everyone in a certain geographic region? Even though cultures are always being created and disappearing.

I understand that people should be free to chose their own traditions,or none at all,and not forced do to something because of the area around the coordinates they live.

Of course they can. But our government should promote our culture, not theirs. Now, we can't choose because Spain coordinates our live.

The problem is that Spain wants to absorb us. We have immigrants of other countries and we don't have any problem with them.

Why are you so into "your culture" when that is the least concern when becoming independent/starting a new nation. Unless Catalonia will be able to get into the EU,Schengen Agreement and eurozone right after it leaves Spain, then it would just screw up Catalonia for a long time.

If I felt like making a country and had the connections and resources to do so, Id be more worried about economics then deciding on what culture to have in my new country.

    This is an interesting subject.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalan_nationalism

So my first question after reading this article was "What percentage of Calalonians are in favor of independence?" and when I went searching for the answer to this question, the results were unclear.

What's that mean? Opportunity. You can help your country to gain independence, and make a little money in the process by establishing an authority site on this issue. It doesn't matter if you aren't an expert as the site is going to be viewed by people that know less about it than you do.

You could even set up a charitable fund "freecatalonianow.org" and solicit donations, and keep a reasonable percentage of them for your "overhead", lol.

In fact, as I think about this, you could use the independence issue to create a "gateway" site that feeds people interested in catalonia to other places like travel sites, and make some $$ for sending traffic that way also.

I was born and live in Catalonia, and what says Arkanian it's false...well, not all the true...

Catalonia has never been a country,(there was a federation called "condado de Barcelona" and after a kingdom called "Reino de Aragon", united with a region of Spain called Aragon...
This war 300 years ago was a war to decide the king of SPAIN, the Borbon family (the actual kings of Spain) wants to center all the power in their hands, so catalonians (as many other places of the country) raise in arm to conservate the power they have... Catalonia was part of Spain and has some level of autonomy...much less than we have right now.

In recent surveys 47% of catalonians wants the independence and 41% wants to continue being part of Spain(the rest didn't know)

Today we have elections and in the last weeks the Catalonian nationalists a Spanish nationalist have been telling so many lies that all us believe in them and really forget about the real problem of our people: the economical crisis.

Please pray for us not to all this craziness end in a civil war...
