It really goes back to what your business plan is and what you are trying to do. If you are just leasing a server and leasing IP and you are giving free hosting away. 9 times out of 10 the people that use free hosting will abuse the IP which in turn could get your up line provider to suspend your hosting account.
Free hosting is a good way to get a ton of people in the door. But could cause you more issues than its worth down the road.

This is well said. Also, having someone who is looking for free stuff is way harder to convert to paid customer in any niche (not just hosting). At prices that hosting could be found (not talking about quality) these days I do believe that days of free hosting are over.

Many companies have been using this free hosting tactic to gain paid customers. But when you start giving away free hosting the chance of your servers and services getting abused reaches sky high. So I would suggest you to manually survey each and every site of your customers before giving them a free hosting space. That way you will also get to know your customers' requirements and pitch in "exciting offers just for them" to best suit their needs.
