it depends on your purpose... if you just want to pass geo-logging etc. then maybe a free one is OK (I never used a free VPN).
But if you try to be anonym as possible, then you definitely should go with a premium one. There are simply too many possibilities of leaking information and leaving footprints. For instant, if your Browser config or PC config is weak no VPN can save you.

most of the premium VPN's have a knowledgebase/tutorials etc. and a customer support.
quick overview:
- safest encryption standard aes256
- safest protocols OpenVPN
- avoid Adobe stuff
- javascript is not your friend
- HTTPS/Everywhere
- block canvas footprint
- don't use 3rd party plugins
- and the most important... use your brain
