Hey there,

I am actually an engineer by trade. I want to use AI for doing more coding. How can I start getting my feet wet for free before I pay for a subscription given this is hobby based and may not be regular for me.

What tools do you use? I use open router with n8n. Maybe a tool that works with open router free API or something.

Thank you all

No student offers please.

If you want it then pay for it. It's not free for continuous use, as it incurs significant costs to operate. I sub to 3 ai's and it's still cheaper than paying someone to explain and work with you, by far.

Coding is my hobby too. But I want to turn it into a business. You either commit your sword cut to the duty, or you pass up and let others develop the things you could only dream of.

I use ClaudeAI to help me with coding stuff. It has made my life so easier. If you have some coding knowledge, then the free version of ClaudeAI is enough. If you want to develop tools without much effort, then try Windsurf or CursorAI. Windsurf has a free plan with a limited number of credits, so if you like it after the testing, you can get the paid plan.

You can test Claude 4 Sonnet for free using Claude’s web platform.

If you want to manage a larger code-base, Cursor and Claude Code both are very useful.

+1 for Claude AI, both site and add-on are pretty good, only thing that it's bad at is frontend.

Google Gemini CLI is free at the moment, you just need a Google account. I hook it up to VS Code on WSL for Windows, all free.
