Free University Courses

Some of you might already be aware of this; others may appreciate knowing - but there is an interesting website that offers free courses from 16 different Universities throughout the world. I am taking the Internet History, Technology and Security course which is really interesting (at least the first module so far), and so is my almost ten year old son. He's fascinated seeing how we used to "dial" with telephones - I daresay there might even be some here on this board that are not old enough to remember the use of dial telephones

I've also signed up for a course on Logic which starts in a few weeks. The Internet History course has already begun, but I think you can get in on it still if you want.

There is quite a varied selection of courses you can take, some with different levels of expected knowledge, but for some here, might be a fun thing to do as well as educational, if you're interested in that sort of thing. The link is here: https://www.coursera.org/

No problem.. hope it might interest someone or a few.. I was pretty impressed when I saw it.. I will tell you, it's a load of fun doing that Internet History one with my son! He was born in 2002... and has never not known the Internet, or even seen a dial telephone, LOL.

You're welcome! And yes, they are from good schools. I was pretty amazed when I discovered them.. my son's mother told me about the site and how our 9 year old son was so intrigued and interested in the Internet History course. I had to have a look.. and then when visiting with my son today, was impressed with what he had learned!

I know there are so many here on BHW who are gifted, talented, and always wanting to learn - so I'm glad there are some who are happy with being made aware of this. I'm curious as to what courses others might be signing up for

So far for me, it's the Internet History and Logic course.

And everyone will be getting a certificate from the university the course is from, but you have to pass all your quizzes though. I think you need atleast %75.

I have not explored that in a whole lot of detail.. for me, it's about learning, not the certificate. But the quizzes, you can attempt multiple times - it's the final exam i think that counts the most. But whatever... certificate or not.. nice that you can get access to some really sweet education if you want it... using some great technology.. and for those who are younger here... this stuff was just not available 20 years ago. Heck, not even 15 years ago, to this kind of degree!!

I'm an "old guy".. turning 49 this year... you know what I would have given, 29 or 30 years ago, for this kind of opportunity?? It's priceless.

In my "day," an advanced calculator that could do cosine calculations cost over a hundred bucks, and that's when the minimum wage in Canada as about 2.50 an hour. I worked on a farm for 12 to 14 hours a day, making $250.00 a week, and I smelled like cow manure on Saturday nights going out to parties, no matter how long I showered for. I seriously hope people realize and appreciate what they have today.. even when stuff screws up, servers crash, internet connections go down, and while all that is going on, don't forget about the simple things in life too!

I was thinking of this exact website the other day. FYI if you take the courses you will have access to forums. And you can ask to see peoples essays and such

Free content. I am just saying.

Sadly, the term "liberal/Liberal" doesn't mean what it used to mean. I'm a "liberal" in the classical sense.. the original "liberals" were those folk that fought government, fought against silly concepts of allegiance to country and king, and fought for individual inherent rights. Great men like John Locke and Voltaire, and other philosophers, upon whom the Declaration of Independence was founded upon... today, "liberalism" and "conservatism" are so mixed up and almost devoid of true philosophical thought.

I come from a country where history is so lied about, so wrong, and taught totally based on religious crap, that facts are missed out, and it's skewered to try to promote allegiance and group thinking.. it's nuts and very unfortunate.

To be a true "liberal," one must read John Locke, Thomas Paine, Jefferson, and be open minded to having their beliefs questioned, while at the same time, tolerating others of different beliefs. Liberalism was the means to escape and get away from intolerance and regulation of individuals, that there is a long history behind. Sadly, that history is not well known these days.

I highly recommend the MIT courses, particularly the Sloan Business school ones. They are details, learning these skills is highly translatable in other areas: for example learning Product Design and Development will make you understand how to identify customer needs. These high-level concepts help greatly in IM.
