I am using SEOquake and it's pretty good to check your competitors and your on page seo. And of course you can use free Google tools.

The better free SEO tools are hosted. That is you use them online : link checkers, broken link checkers, kw density and so on.
Otherwise for apps you need paid tools.

I use mozbar google chrome extension to check my competition, ahrefs, google trends, google keyword planner. Whitehat talking here...:cow04:

There is a good write up over on white hat seo on ranking without backlinks. It's not my post but it does give a great overview of how to do onsite seo well.
Once you have that swept up then look at tools, otherwise you are fighting upstream.

You should use auto search tool with different IPs on google then click on link what you want and spend several minutes on site. It's really useful for seo . Be patient , success will come.
