I'm sure most know this trick, but in case someone hasn't tried it, I get good results from following this process:

  • get a list of URLs that you'd like to have a link on (perhaps a list of URLs from MajSEO or a similar tool that have links on them pointing to competitors)
  • use a bl checker to see if any lnks are broken
  • for any links that are broken, contact the webmaster of the site with the broken link on it and say, "This link is bust, how about exchanging it for a link to my lovely page HERE instead?"
It can get over the sticky issue of sending a spammy link request to the webmaster.

For really nice URLs that you really want you can create the perfect landing area in advance to appeal even more to the webmaster.

Just one tool amongst many, but it can be effective.
