This is likely not new or exciting.

I thought it was some kind of trap. Put my name in for NC, it showed up for "Under $50". Filled out a super quick form on October 23rd. Thought nothing of it. Checked my mail today (October 29th), and there's a letter from the Department of the State Treasurer for NC. Check made out to me for $10.55. I can just mail it to the bank with the rest of the month's checks. Four coffees for 45 seconds of work. Not a bad find. I've heard of people getting $300+ from this.

Its a real thing, not sure about that domain, but by law they have to submit money you're owed and its held for a period of years. I claimed like $250 from a check that I had forgotten about and it came a few weeks later. Again, not vouching for that site, but this is a real thing in the US.

edit: checked that site and its real, it just redirects you to the state treasury website for whatever state you choose, you can also directly visit the site for the state where you think you have an unclaimed check.

If you don't believe it go to your official state treasury website they will tell you to search these databases then come back to them to file a claim.

If I owned a top 70k US Alexa-ranked 20+ year old website that was page two for the search term "scam", then I would likely not be a member here. I'd instead be sitting back enjoying a paycheck.

Well, fair's fair - a bit of healthy scepticism isn't a bad thing if people are asking for personal info. I'm not from the US either, so it did sound potentially dodgy.

However, 30 seconds of research will give you an answer:

The domain's registered to the organisation, which is listed as a State Government Conservation Department. They've owned it since 1998 (wayback machine). It's got a TF of 59 with numerous, seriously authoritative backlinks like 74 governmental referring domains.

Where to Look for Unclaimed Money

Currently, the government does not have one central website for finding unclaimed money by name, Social Security number, or state. To find unclaimed money from the government, you can check a number of sources, such as:

States' Unclaimed Money

Search by State - Search your state's listing of unclaimed funds and property.

Others include ca.gov, washington.edu, house.gov etc

It's even got backlinks from abc and cnn on investigative pieces that give this site as the legitimate way to check.

There comes a point where you need to accept the weight of evidence.

Here in Mass, they are advertising all over the radio. Findmassmoney.com. It is legit. Every state treasury has something like it. Of course, it is never smart to give your personal info until you know who you are giving it to...so just verify first.

Ive know about this..but using my IM brain..i've thought of a pretty easy way for noobs to make money off this. (without scamming lol)

-Scrape the hell out of some uncommon names.
-Find the people who have $300+ coming to them.
-Find them on facebook/google
-Contact them and let them know they have money owed to them.
-Request a % finder's fee.

This isn't fullproof, but if you find someone $300 they may be prone to give you a portion of it.

There might be something to think about yeah. I would definitely chase low-income people & try and find cheap people that would love to see that money back.

Usually I'm the overly skeptical one. Nice to see someone else get roped into the role for a change. Seriously though I've used the state sites and found money owed to myself and relatives plenty of times. For convenience and security I always go directly to the appropriate .gov site first.

That is not the states treasury website they all end with .gov not .com , it's sad someone this smart uses to take advantage of people

Not true. Look at the second result on this page: maryland.gov/Pages/default.aspx#?search=comptroller

Either the OP's site is real, and the .com extension for the claim pages is legit, or the scam goes so high that even governments are getting in on the action to steal social security numbers...

Wow! Thanks OP. I searched my name and found that I am owed over $900! I had a life insurance policy through Prudential that I cancelled several years ago. It was the type that accrues a cash value over time. Funny that Prudential didn't just send me check when I cancelled. Anyway, thanks for posting this. Much appreciated!
