Link exchanges are bad for #SEO because they add little value to the user.
That's not necessarily true. Yes, if the link exchange is just where each site posts a link in a sidebar, that's not real useful. But if two people exchange articles with links, and post those articles on their sites, then it can be useful.
Also, the OP says he has multiple sites. So it's not a straight exchange that Google doesn't like (as in, Site A links to Site B, and then Site B links to Site A - that's an easy exchange for Google to spot). OP can do something like Site A links to Site B, and Site C links to Site B (3-way link exchange). That can be helpful for backlinking purposes.
