I've tried creating quite a few free backlinks, but I only see results with relevant links that have genuine interaction. The mass-generated links hardly budge at all. So it's best to focus on a few quality sources; it's safer and saves time

I find their effectiveness is only very mild, mainly helping to diversify the link profile. If you want to see a clear change, you still have to combine some higher quality links or well-optimized content, but relying entirely on free links is often not enough
