Backlinks are still incredibly important, but the way things are played has completely changed. If you think of your website as a book then the content is the quality of the knowledge inside while backlinks are the endorsements from other experts.

Free backlinks can still work in 2026, but it really depends on the type and how you use them.
Most basic ones like profile links, forum signatures, or mass directory submissions don’t move rankings much anymore by themselves. Google tends to ignore a lot of those.
However, some free backlinks still help, especially when they come from places that have real pages indexed and some activity. For example:
* Niche forums where your post actually gets indexed
* Web 2.0 blogs with decent content
* Social platforms that allow contextual links
* Free guest post opportunities on smaller blogs
From my experience they work best when used as tier or support links rather than the main ranking links.
The bigger impact usually comes from contextual links, guest posts, and authority placements, while free backlinks help diversify the backlink profile.

My view is that both are still necessary because content helps you retain users, while backlinks help Google find and trust you faster. In the context of AI changing everything, the combination of traditional SEO techniques and real world human experience is key.
