No. They rarely work. They used to but they don't now. Even paid ones sometimes don't move the needle. And be careful while building backlinks. Building random links does more damage than not building any at all...

Don't obsess over DA/ PA/ DR. Make sure that the domain in question has organic traffic and not just that, the traffic should be from niche relevant keywords.
And not to mention, the webmaster should be trustworthy. He shouldn't remove the guest post after receiving the payment. Happened with me once when I purchased a guest post from a seller on BHW but I didn't dispute as it wasn't such a big amount anyway.
Besides this, experiment. Experiment as much as possible.

I always thought that DA was the most important factor,,,,, but I see now that focusing on organic traffic from niche keywords is as important.

Yeah, many focus only on DA. And this is what some sellers prey upon. So be careful out there.

Guest posts are free. Basically you post at another website owner's website. And you do this because you have for example experience in a problem or a topic that he wants to cover and display information. So you write a blog post to his site and you link it back to your website. He solves a problem for other people similar to your niche and he gains authority from your post. You gain authority because you get that backlink which otherwise you wouldn't be able to get. And it's free meaning you only use your knoweldge to create that backlink. I hope that helps. Free backlinks means most of the time Garbage links and you can get free backlinks for review copies from bhw sellers or you can read the guides that have provided which have lot of method to create backlinks

avoid free , most of them are spammy and pointed to hundred of spammy website , get some nice paid ones , safer and better

You can use discussion forums for free backlinks if they allow, also you can find free guest post sites for backlinks.

In the mostly cases paid guest posts tend to be more effective.
