free alternatives to google analytics?

Statcounter works fine for me.

I use piwik. Bought a domain and setup a site to host it. Use it for all my sites and track "remotely" so it can't be traced back to the domain and thus find all my sites.

Piwik is your choice.

About your problem I suspect that you made the test without clearing your cookies.

Clear your cookies, use a proxy and then search your website in G and access it from the search engine and then you will see that your kw will appear but probably will look like :"Keyword not defined".

The only way to see kw's is through "webmaster stools".
