Free Alternative to Aweber... from Google?

I was watching this video on Google Friend Connect and noticed near the end that she mentions that you can create newsletters and manage them through your Friend Connect account.

Has anybody tried this out?

Sure, you can use it that way, but it somewhat restricts who signs up for your newsletters. There are other freemium options that you can use if you're worried about the cost of aweber.
