Found the perfect niche - how do I get better than competitors?

Like the title says, I've found a good niche. I know one of the guys there is making $30k a month from his blog. There are a lot more blogs writing about the same stuff, doing as well as him.

It's not a niche you would necessarily have an affinity for. Anyone really can write content in that space and you don't need first-hand experience.

That being said, how do I ensure that my website ranks above theirs? Would Google penalise my website if I write about the same topic? There's not much creativity room for these blogs.

$30,000 isn't a lot.
Also, nobody's gonna hold your hand.

You ensure you rank above theirs by writing better content, offering more value, and building a stronger link profile. It’s simple but definitely not easy

  • Know your target audience inside/out
  • Build a topical map
  • Write highly engaging, unique, and relevant content that will resonate with your target audience
    • Make sure that content is high quality from both a UX and SEO perspective.
  • Promote that content as much as you can

If that was the case, there will be only one blog per niche.

I wouldn't enter a space because someone at the top of their vertical is making $30,000 a month, especially if it's than like that you won't usurp them anytime soon.

For example, one of the guys in my space is doing about $200-400K USD a month--I don't think I'm going to be beating him in the next few years.

Try to find some niche relevant forums or weak sites. Scrape their keywords. And check the SERP for finding which sites are in the top 10 with thin content and irrelevant topics. And those who are in the top 3, check how many referring domains they have on that particular page, their domain rating and content quality. Then you can compare with your domain and link availibilities to measure the rank opportunities.

You probably won't beat the leader at the big audience, but you might be able to deliver even better content for a micro niche within their audience. It's actually really great they're making $200-$400k/mo since it validates the niche is valuable.
 
There are people making well over 30k/m who work in the janitorial service industry.

I wouldn't recommend idolizing a niche because of what the top players are making. Pick a niche because you can be one of the top players.

Much better to be the CEO of a 100mm company than an analyst for a 1b one.
 
Do a perfect keyword research, write quality article that help readers, then keep posting article.. Don't forget to build EAT for your site. Try to earn backlinks.

Simple: REVERSE ENGINEER the top 5 guys that show up in results

Get their sitemap xml and rip their urls

Next, rip their topics and cross reference with keyword targets

Next, analyze for how well they deliver on search intent

DELIVER on search intent and make sure your content is more comprehensive than the top 5

Also, focus on:

readability
engaging titles
'baiting' the reader to click deeper into your site
make bold promises then deliver - be clear that you offer value

Depending on your niche, focus on ACTIONABILITY
