What are some of the better forums to use out here now?

yea i was leaning towards SMF. I heard bulletin is easy to hack

smf is quite good, considering it is free.
if you have money, vbull is the best.

SMF is good but IPB and Vbulletin are definitely a big step up in terms of support, better templates, upgrades etc.

I believe you'd have to pay for vbulletin?
Initially, if you want to start out open source, phpbb may be an option as well

@hj38 - Yes, a license costs $180 but it's worth it in my opinion.

- For a larger project, use VBulletin with VBSeo
- For something smaller, I recommened SMF
