in IM its never predictible who will be on top in coming days. When facebook was launched, there was already alot of competetion among social networks. When whatsapp came in, there were already hundreds of messengers. And alot more examples like that.

Remember when Zuck launched FB there was myspace, Orkut and couple of others I can't remember exactly. And you know the result
When Whatsapp launched in 2009, there were already other messengers like MSN messenger, google talk, and some others I don't remember the name exactly. The thing is it is NEVER late to follow your dream and take action it.

Notice you only got positive replies here but I am sure if you ask the same to some of your friends who have a bit knowledge about IM, they would say NO it's too late to start. Because they don't you to start and would drive off upcoming competition.

You don't need to ask anyone. Just take action and give your everything on that project and you will definitely see success!
