I would like to know if forum posting is still effective in 2018. Does niche relate forum carry more weight?
How would be the best way to link back to your site?

Keywords link as signature or have create a banner to link back.

There are a lot of authority forums in various niches where you can quickly create a profile and add link to your site. But if you spam the forum they will Block you immediately. Always try to add provide helpful information and add the link if its relevant to the content.

Forum links suck for SEO - plain and simple.

They are effective for targeted traffic though IF you post in forums that relate to your link.

As to SEO though, they have not had much value for years.

I haven't seen any significant SEO value in forum links, also getting them on relevant forum topics is pretty hard, by manually only, cause automated link spam and forum profiles won't help you.

Ok let me tell you a story.

I created crypto affiliate website (non English) between xmas and New year (so a bit over month old now) with the intention to use AdWords as there was 0 competition for this language. However the website ranked better than expected (2nd 3rd page for major keywords - how to buy bitcoin, how to buy ethereum, how to buy crypto currency etc), so I decided to do a little free link building and see where it will go. The result:

All of the major keywords are in top 10. What links did I build? Forums. Just forums. There was several forums ranking for this very searches, so I went register and post in the exact thread that was ranking so well. So excuse me guys, but forums DO work, regardless of being no follow, and they indeed give a major boost. So what I can recommend you? See which forums are ranking well for your target keywords/niche, go register and post there. Thank me later.

Ignore DA or any other metric - if the forum ranks well for this keywords, thats all you need to know. In my case i just start manually Googling "how to buy bitcoin", "how to buy ethereum" etc. etc. and look for forums that are ranked up to page 3. Then I post in exact same thread that appear in the SERP. I also got a shitload of traffic from there as well because people who looked for this keywords opened the forums and saw my post. I also did NOT use any profile or signature links - those are way too spammy in my opinion. Just links in the post. Since I cared enough to make a good guide with screenshots and everything my posts actually stick, people thanked me and even got some FB shares that bring nice traffic as well. Those are the stats for the past 2 weeks (since I stopped the adwords campaign):

You should get links from forums posting related to your niche. Be sure not to use exact match anchors in signature.
