Forgotten my password - need help breaking it

So if I get this correctly you need the password of your VPS? Why not go to your hosting company and ask for a password reset.

No, nothing to do with the VPS. This is a seperate server I have in front of me that i want to start using instead of a VPS.

I can't log in to the server in front of me because i have forgotten the password as i haven't used it in 2 years

Just to be clear, it is my server that i have in my office that i have forgotten the username and password to and would like a tool that can break the password. Nothing illegal, no serial cracks for MS or anything. I want to break the password so i don't have to format it as that would require buying another license for Windows 2008 R2 which is expensive

There's a program out there which allows you to see all passwords saved on a computer and it boots like windows would do. Though I forgot the name, maybe try googling it? :/

try ophcrack OPHCRACK , if you don't have have luck with that try cain & abel or john the ripper

OR search for ultimatbootcd , ubcd4win , seclists org

Hiren Boot CD is exactly what you need. http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd-on-usb-disk download the iso, burn it to a disk or USB drive. Boot up from the hiren stick or USB drive, inside them you'll have a menu with different anti-virus, disck checks, dozens of software, it shouldn't be of much hassle to find the one for the password reset. I've used the software on various computers myself, it works like a charm THOUGH:

You won't be able to recover the password, it's probably encrypted you can either REMOVE or CHANGE the password.

Let me know if you need additional help or if it worked. Cheers

Thanks, that's helpful. Don't i need a boot CD though which i don't have :( ?

Try booting Hiren't Boot CD with a flash drive. Most BIOS's can boot flash USB's too.

The dvd drive on the server is not working. When i put a bootable disk in, it doesn't boot. I am guesing that once I can get into the machine, I can run a driver update and get it working. I therefore need to put the password breaker onto a USB. Do you get bootable and non bootable USB drivers or is it just a case of putting the boot files on there if they aren't already?

Thanks but to do this i need to get into the machine which i can't do without a password. It needs to be on a bootable disk

Wait wait wait, is there a password on WINDOWS or on the BIOS? if it's the BIOS you're basically screwed and formatting the HDD is completely useless. if It's on the windows, just get a bootable drive from your normal computer, connect it in, look it up on google it's not a big deal. Either that or make a USB drive, they have instructions on their website but it's some-what more complicated than doing the CD.

The password is on Windows, not the bios. Fortunately i never set a password on the BIOS. How can i connect another computer up to it when i can't get into the machine?
