foreign domains ranking

I was wondering if it's harder to rank say a co.uk domain in the USA because it is a foreign domain? Does anyone have experience with this?

Although I'm no expert at SEO but I've had many minisites with .in and .me extensions ranking on first page and some in even top 3 at google for some highly competetive keywords.

do they rank high in the USA? or just in india?

They ranked high in global searches as well as indian searches. Definitely they had better results in local searches than they had with global one's due to the ccTLD.

All I know is you can choose which country to target in google webmaster's tools.

actually it is not hard...you simply have to push the domains fw like you would do to any other domain like those from US. About 4 months ago I had a site on a foreign domain .It ranked high because of promotion and I sold it. As I see it went down a little but I guess the chap who bought it is not using the same advertisement package I used.

Despite many people saying .ws stands for 'website', in actual fact it is the country specific TLD for Samoa (see: hxxp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.ws) - swap hxxp for http!

So, if you choose to use a .ws tld for ranking in UK or USA, you won't be able to do things like set country-target in google's webmaster tools, and your site *may* be seen as a Samoa based site...

It would be the same as going with a .co.uk domain when targeting USA...

Consider a .co domain, recently these switched from being a country based domain (Columbia - hxxp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.co ) to a non-country specific tld. swap hxxp for http!

I have been wondering this. I have an 18 month old .co.uk and am wondering if I should just switch it to a similar .com to get more USA traffic? I have a .com that is 6 months old but with less backlinks. Do you think I should make the change now while neither site is doing brilliantly?

I would definitely switch, if only because some US viewers may click away if they see ".co.uk" at the end of the url.
