Do you build links to your clients website or do you build links to your a domain you own and use a redirect?

Who has experience with linkbuilding in combination with a 301 redirect? Is it effective?

    Please share your experiences! :D

301 redirects will work, when client subscribed for monthly seo services. If client makes one time payment, better place links directly to his domain.

    301 redirects link building works.

I have been in the offline business for about 10 months. Up until about 3 weeks ago I always built links directly to the clients site. After been burned several times I decided to control the game and send links only to sites I own and do a 301 redirect. So far I have not had the same results in Google, but I will have to give it sometime to fully evaluate.

Does anyone know if I buy a domain and then also create 10 different subdomains that Google will look at these subdomains as seperate sites?

I sold a domain recently that was ranked one, the new owner put on a redirect on my old domain, and he ranked first with his own site within a few days

I link directly to client sites. Only if client want to hide link source and request redirect I do it.

I link directly to clients site... as a matter of fact, I use as a "selling point" that we're not "one of THOSE" companies that do 301 redirects and leave you with nothing at the end of the campaign!

@ corvettespeeder: Yes, Google looks at them pretty much as "separate sites", although not completely IMO, but you do have to get them to rank on their own standing... link juice is not passed from main domain.

I am really curious to see how my 301 sites will do for ranking. I think 301 redirects are the way for long term wealth because once a client leaves you can just give that link juice to the next guy.

    Home Page:
Links, blog links and article marketing. Press releases work very well also. Throw in a real nice FB Fan Page, as well.
