I earned around 400$ last year from my articles but I stopped posting afterwards when its value dropped. It's a good platform if you have good content.
And yes, you get money for every upvote but each upvote has different voting power. The value of each upvote depends upon the amount of steem power the upvoter has.

You can earn but first few months with be very bitter. you post good awesome content and you get what? 0.01$ for it .Even thaearned money you have to power up your account and stuff. IF you have a good friend there with lots of connections and reputation is like 65+ then go for it and ask your friend to promote you among his friends and resteem your articles. That is the best way to earn some bucks . Otherwise, road is lonely and bitter. you could spend that effort in your own niche website and earn much better comparatively .
