For big authority site, did you use WP or something else?

Hi

This goes to people with big sites, so please share your thoughts if you have a minute or 2.

I started working on getting all the data needed to start my first huge authority site. I started researching the topic and the field is huge with a lot of competitors. It doesn't matter, I am not doing it to get rich over night.
Now, while shopping to day, I was thinking about the site and how it should look like. And I am wondering should I go with WP or somnething else. I know WP is easy to use even if you're a total begginer but that's not the point.

Just wanted something that can work good on a long run with tons of content, membership, videos, images, etc etc..like any big site. So, should I use WP, what did you use, what are you using for your site? Anyone have this kind of site?

Yes, I know it is easy, but I see majority of big sites do not use WP, so I was wondering if anyone has big site to share his/her thoughts
 
I go with your concern OP on the basis that I have an AS with 1000?s of pages of content running for over 4 years then it fell over, and is at present offline it was not built on a WP platform, however there is no way I would rebuild it on WP as I see no way that it would hold up to content and traffic as speed will be a problem to get the WP to load and display quickly?

But I am still looking as I have not made my mind up yet!

But I know it will not be WP!
 
I am using drupal :) its not as easy as wordpress but you do got some more options. At the moment I got about 200 indexed pages. Not so much visitors so I dont know how its performing. Everything looks stable though, hope at the end of the month to be around 500 pages of content.
 
I have a couple of big sites as far as I can see they should never outgrow wordpress. When I started I figured wordpress was a stepping stone to a real site but in the last four years wordpress just keeps on suprising me.

I am currently speccing out a site that will be pretty massive and my coder has recommended to buiild it in wordpress.

I run most of my authority sites on Drupal. Why?
- It is more secure than WordPress
- It is more powerful than WordPress
- I also find that, while having less plugins/modules, they are better than all WordPress' combined
- It can do anything you mentioned about (content, membership, videos, images, etc etc)
- It's more flexible than WordPress. Drupal was originally intended to allow people to build any type of websites. WordPress was originally intended to be a blog platform only.
- It's not that hard to learn (harder than WordPress but not hard overall)

Lots of big sites, including governmental agencies run on Drupal (e.g. http://www.whitehouse.gov/).

I guess I was hoping to see this kind of sentence because WP still looks like the best option (for me).

Thanks everybody.. I checked modx.com but I am not sure if I wanna go that way (maybe I should learn a little bit about it but my eyes hearth so I try to do the basics on PC)

Drupal sounds like a good option but if I have to choose between WP and Drupal I think I will choose WP especially since DUffers said he had no problems and his coder recommends it.

BTW, just bought a domain 5 minutes ago, so yeah, I guess I am gonna start this huge site thing. Not sure if it is a smart thing to do but I don't like thinking too much, no time for that. Act now, think about it later :)
 
I heard different things too about WP.
(NOTE: Have you noticed that anyone who specializes in one program is constantly promoting that program? Could be Drupal, Joomla, etc.)

What is your target type site?
Can you show us an example of what your site will look like in 2 yrs?

This is what you should be focusing on (IMHO).
 
if using blogspot (Blogger). how do you think?

Rank Alexa under 20.000, but the site is not english?

due to security concerns, I heard that Blogger is better than WP.
 
Personally, I don't use wordpress or any other blogging software. I tried to use it and it was annoying and seemed inflated. I build my own platforms from scratch. I find that it is easier on pageloads and I don't have to worry about vulnerabilities in the script. For those that do not know how to program it is much easier to use wordpress.
 
I use WP for my main personal authority website.
You can do lots of things with it with paid plugins, premium memberships for example for $XX/month.

There's nothing advanced you can't do with WP as far as we talk about an authority blog/website.
And if you a plugin to do something you need, you can always pay a programmer to create things for you.

I'll go for WP without hesitation my friend.

Better WP Security
and many other plugins are the ones you should not forget to install.

If you know how to optimize your hosting and optimize your Wordpress platform, you should be fine with just WP...
A lot of big authority sites use Wordpress with no problem at all...
I will just name smashingmagazine, they use WP and I have never had any problem browsing or reading them...
WP is a very powerful CMS if used right :)

What CMS is little relevance as to whether your site will be an authority or not, it's all about what kind of content you put on the site.
 
Wordpress is fine for an authority site. Your going to be using some sort of CMS and if you are used to using Wordpress and feel the most confident with it. I say go for it.

So far this is the only post that has raised a real issue with Wordpress's viability as a platform for an authority site. I would like to know more about this. Why are you saying that you see no way a WP site would hold up against authority site traffic and content?
