In the beginning of a site you want to just work on building out your entity stack - so relevant socials, niche forums/communities, even local directories if applicable. You don't really want to go chasing article/contextual links until you see some rankings start appearing in the top 30 - just longtails will do. This shows that Google is beginning to trust your site. Then you can start looking at article-based link opportunities, but go easy with the keyword anchors. Look at the link graph for the top 10 in your niche and try and follow what they are doing.

Top tier advice. Wait until you're having some organic success elsewhere before looking at building a lot of those types of links.
