Hey Guys! Zionbar here with another post that will hopefully teach you something new...

So, Why the dramatic title, and why do i think these mistakes are deadly?

Simple - if you don't avoid them, your online marketing can literally die... be over with... buh-bye, back to working at mcdonalds.

As the title suggests, in todays post i'll go over these main mistakes new affiliate marketers make that are literally preventing you from achieving success and making money.

Its important to be pro-active and make sure that if you catch yourself doing these - stop, think, and change the route you're taking.

When I started to make money online and learn about IM in general (somewhere back in 2007/8) there wasn't so much info about affiliate marketing which is both good and bad.

Good - because we had to figure things out by ourselves.
Bad - because we had to figure EVERYTHING out by ourselves :)

Thats why im trying to help folks out, especially on BHW.

If you can learn from my mistakes, than why not... this forum gave me so much that i dont think ill ever be able to give back.

So without making this thread too long ( I know you guys have the attention span of a jellyfish :p ) lets dive right in

Affiliate Mistake #1: Not Knowing The Product

This to me really is mind boggling, but i can understand why this is happening.

The bottom line is - you're worried more about making a quick buck then starting an actual business. Thats it. thats the cold, hard truth.

Very bad mentality imo.

Why?
As a salesman (iv been in the sales business for many years, offline and online) how the F can you sell a product you don't really know?
I mean, what are we doing here? stop trying to BS ppl and actually learn.

What do I mean?
Lets say you're promoting a clickbank product.
Why not email the vendor and ask for a copy? you know how many times iv done it? hundreds of times... and iv done it for physical products as well !

Do you know how many vendors told me to piss off? NONE. Some weren't responsive (which is a red flag and then it told me they're not taking their product seriously - so i didnt even bother promoting it)
And most of them - were happy to send me a review copy of their product and some even thanked me for taking the time to look at their product...

I even remember one vendor was mind blown and told me not 1 affiliate asked for a copy... lol

After you get a copy (or if its a physical product, buy the darn product, or get it for free, whatever) - study it !

If its a digital product - take the f*** time to actually read the damn thing...

Once you KNOW the product, you achieve 3 things -
1. Your content will be way better, or if you have a writer, you will instruct them better and actually provide a better converting piece of content. Wether its video or txt.
2. You will be able to see different angles that u can use to promote that product (thats where the money is, folks) after better understanding it.
3. You will have an EDGE over your competitors, because 99.999% of them are not doing what you're doing.

So next time you're promoting an affiliate program - make sure you get the product before hand and go over it.

Affiliate Mistake #2: Joining too many affiliate programs at the same time

EQDs5on-qTCA24hTxphGH-m7X8FW_pvi4H3FsCCfaTW8iTYWiDAFq0rG7F5ZLHq5yPXhAcFGYOTIs-cg86wFBEHStu17AqAONvYS31dBScGEDOyfFQGbwGLQaCMaAKpTAHi62Oi7FLnXYRJQuON8WnXGST-ZdHWkw-Qx3Q

Heres a new rule: once you pick an affiliate program to promote - you set a goal.
Until you hit that goal - you're NOT promoting anything else.

Lets say you're promoting a diet pill.
Until you reach a certain goal (lets say you want to make $100 a day) you don't (as in DO NOT) join any other affiliate program / try to promote anything else.
You will put 100% effort behind that 1 product you're promoting until you reach your goal.

By joining too many affiliate programs (aka promoting multiple affiliate products) you're spreading yourself too thin.

You dont take the time to study each product in depth....
You dont take the time to understand which angle converts best for each product (how could you ? its just too much info)...
And you will probably not make any money with all of the products youre promoting...

So yeah... stay focused for crying out loud. Its not about promoting 1000 products at once, its all about promoting 1 product and making 1000 conversions with it. get the picture?

I it was either Bruce Lee or @BassTrackerBoats who said :
" I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times. "

Pretty sure it was BTB who said it.
Jokes aside, master 1 affiliate product, don't try to promote 1000 at once, you simply cant not when youre starting out.

Affiliate Mistake #3: NOT TRACKING DATA

Tracking is one of the parts i hate the most about affiliate marketing.

Just because I hate it, doesnt mean i dont do it, because I understand its also one of the most important things an affiliate can do.

If you dont know where the conversion came from, how the heck can u scale?

How do you know which ad to kill and which one to duplicate?

Tracking DOES NOT only apply to paid traffic. It also applied to organic traffic.

Lets say you build an amazon affiliate site.

You have to go over your webmaster tools and specific search queries at least once a month.

See which queries are getting you traffic....
See which search terms are getting some traction - but not enough (maybe high impressions, low ctr)...
How can you improve CTR on those? maybe just build more links, maybe tweak the keywords on the post itself, these are just some ideas.

But you have to track...

If you have an affiliate product that you're promoting via a few sources - make sure you use tracking IDs.
Did the sale came from your youtube video? or your site? or maybe a paid traffic source? how would you know if you dont properly track it?

Affiliate Mistake #4: NOT ANALYZING (AKA IGNORING) DATA

Do you know how many threads iv seen on bhw saying ' why am i getting so many hops on clickbank but no conversions? '
(im using cb as an example but it can happen on any other network as well)

Well, from now on you wont have to create this post anymore because you've read my post.

Heres what could've happened if you're getting clicks but no conversions :
1. The product you picked sucks (aka their sales copy)
2. Your landing page (the page that lead to the click) sucks - (very likely..)
or 3. your traffic sucks (more likely if you're using paid traffic)

If you're getting clicks, as an example, and no sales, what do we know?
the user clicked but have decided not to purchase.
Why?
He either a) didnt see the value or b) didnt understand the offer on your end

If you write " click here to get the free diet pill" and then the user clicks, and see the diet pill costs $100... do you think they'll buy it?
NO! of course NOT!

So whats my point?
Build your funnels with the end goal in mind.
If you know the diet pill costs $100, why not state in your sales page something like " Stop buying these $10,000 diet programs, we've found a pill that's ONLY $100 and will give you MIND BLOWING results? "

That way the user knows what to expect, so if he does click and moves forward - he's more likely to convert.

Again, that was just an example, but always make sure you read your data... whats your CTR? how many clicks are you getting? how many of these clicks actually convert?
Knowing the data and analyzing it, will help you improve your sales and identify, which part of your funnel is FAILING or succeeding, basically.

Affiliate Mistake #5: NOT SETTING GOALS
Let me ask you this - how do you determine if your campaign/venture was successful?
did you set a goal? or are you just being random ?
99% of you didnt set any goals. thats just facts.

By doing that, you're taking affiliate marketing as a game or a hobby, not a business.

Im not talking about ' I wanna buy 3 lambos, 1 in each color " type of bs goals.

Im talking about specific goals.

Lets say you're marketing that diet pill, for instance.

Your goal is to make $1000 a week, and the commission for each sale is $10 lets say.

YOU MUST CALCULATE EXACTLY HOW TO GET THERE IF YOU REALLY WANT TO GET THERE!

So lets do some math:

$1000 / 10 = 100 sales a week.

Lets say your conversion would be 1%. (we're guessing, we wont know everything, but when you are guessing, guess low, we tend to under-estimate how hard these things can be)

So you'll have to get 10,000 clicks in order to make $1000 a week (or 100 conversions of $10 each).

Do you get it?

Now if you know its impossible for whichever traffic source (organic, paid, whatever it is) to reach 10,000 clicks a week, you simply wont reach your goal.

Ask yourself :
Should I use another traffic source? how can I hit the 10,000 clicks a week number? what can be done? do I need more money? do i need to lower my goal?

Be more MINDFUL is my point.
Don't just pick random numbers and when you dont hit them, get mad, curse everyone and say 'f*** this affiliate marketing is dead'.

Take yourself seriously, take affiliate marketing seriously, and you will make money.

Thats all for today folks, hope that helped.

xoxo,
Z

This is amazing. This doesn't only relate to affiliate marketing but should follow for any business.

As they say, should add their own twist according to a specific business.

Nicely summarized, I'd add not being persistent enough. Lots of people just give up too early.
