I want to buy a domain name, let's give you an example. The niche is football but football is already occupied as a domain name

    Lucky enough, foot-ball c o- m is still available

Let's say the word ''football" (not foot-ball) receives 22,000 monthly exact hits in Google.

Would I be able to rank foot-ball c.o -m on the 1st page ? Or will google not recognize foot-ball as 2 words? Because this term only receives 800 exact monthly hits...

Can anyone please give me some advice on this?

Would foot-ball rank amongs the other domain names like football and footballmatch c.o -m or would google not count it in because of the - hyphen ?

    FOOT-BALL.COM

    is already taken.

No it's not...But the domain will be fine with ONE hyphen, no more.. Will only be a bit harder to work with.

It's just an EXAMPLE.... I'm not giving you the real domain name I want to buy, but it's very similar, as it's also the name of a game but with two words, got it?

Though EMD's mean a lot less than they used to, what little value they have though might be worth using.
Better to have "footballboy" or "football11"
Hyphens are a PITA for SE's and also for direct traffic. People forget the hyphen, type it in the wrong place, and go to someone elses site instead of yours.

    [EDIT]

Check out the keyword tool and see the associated words. I've just looked and good words to add are "free" and "all" "game" and "live"
allfootball or freefootball or footballall or footballfree would all be pretty good etc (though no more letter than that - 12 is really the most you want)
These words are - according to Google - highly relavent words when talking about Football. So there's your win.

According to some of the onsite SEO tools 12 is the ideal maximum. In practice it doesn't make a great deal of difference. Better to have 14 letters that people know that start having deliberate mis-spellings or hyphens.

From a personal (real people) POV
Check out my site "foot hyphen ball"

Ok - that's "foot hyphen ball got it"

    An hour later...

"What was that dudes site called?

"Football something - but not football... Oh hang on - here's ESPN - -problem solved"

From a Google POV you are EMD- ng two separate words "foot" (which has it's own niche - like chiropody and shoe sales etc) and "ball" which could mean anything shpere related.
Also SE's don't like hyphens for some reason. They aren't the devil's gonad seed or anything - it's just better not to have them.

Many people think that using domains with - will work good, but it will not, and here is why :

When somebody is searching, for example, keyword football, Google will show him domains and pages related to key word football, but if somebody is searching for foot ball, they your domain with "-" will get better rank.
It's way better to buy a domain with the keyword inside, it does not pretty much matter what is the rest of the domain, it can be like footballwhatever.com and it will still get way better rank because it has football in the name, FOOT-BALL.com does not have football keyword in the domain.
