I sent out letters a about 4 days ago, and figured I should probably follow up with a call. My letter basically told them I had advertising space on my website that's ranked on the first page in google for their niche. When I call them, what should I say/ask? It's to several dentist offices local to my area.

There's a difference between direct response marketing and lead generation letters. You send the letter out to warm them up so it isn't as cold when you do your follow up call. Most business owners are extremely busy, they might not have time or remember to call you, so you have to call them to prompt them to action.

If you sent personal lead generation letters out, usually the advice is to specify in the letter when you are going to follow up so they are expecting your call, like "I will follow up with a phone call in a week.".

When you call them, sell the benefits of advertising on your site. They don't care if you have a website or a car wash, they just want to know how they are going to get more business out of it.

You obviously have not been in marketing very long then. You don't understand the importance of follow up calls? Go understand it, THEN come critique someones thread. You have no idea what you are talking about.

By all means you should follow-up with a phone call. In most professional offices the actual business owner may not have even seen your letter - receptionist got it and threw it out. Or if they did get it they haven't really thought about it or had time to pursue it.

The key to your follow-up call is going to be getting through to the actual dentist. You will almost certainly get the receptionist. They are not going to put your through to the dentist and will most likely just take a message. You need to think about what you are going to say to the receptionist to ensure the dentist gets your message. You can go for something vague like - you are following up with Dr. X...when would be a good time to call back.

Set your personal feelings aside and make money! In life you will get rejected more than accepted. You can choose to act out of anger or move on to the next one. Don't let fear or anger stop you.

you may want to reverse your thinking....owners get so much crap in the mail, most is tossed out by receptionist before it hits the owners desk. Direct Mail is very expensive, you can only expect, at best a .5% response rate, (national average) probably less. Why not just call the owner (if this is the plan of your attack - I wouldnt do it) and say I mailed you information regarding (?) I just wanted to make sure it made it to your desk.... Whether you sent it or not, he will always say no....Then you can say; That is unfortunate, I spent alot of time researching your business, spent .45 cents on it, and the postman never delivered it...Figures....government... you really cant depend on govt to do anything can you.... (this way you are developing rapport and conversation with him)......Then say well let me do this...let me take 10 seconds of your time, see if you have an interest, and I will resend it to you if you see that we have a match..... just a thought
