I left Fiverr a long time ago. I have no idea if my gigs are still there, but what turned me off is the time frame on the payment process. Imagine for a simple article worth $5, it would take 15 days to clear up at paypal and what's worse, you only get a net pay from the deductions. Such a waste of my time and effort, I must say..

you may have noticed or not, but fiverr has gigs other than article services
if it's not a thing i can complete in a minute, it doesn't worth my time, that's why i have push-button gigs only
the latest change seems to favor the top sellers again or maybe just a coincidence, but the number of orders i receive seems to be returned back where they were before fiverr changed the algo the last time ~ a month ago
regarding to algo changes: at least they don't forget to remind us the basic rule of money making: we need to have multiple income streams from different sources

The fiver sidebar and filters for category, popularity, and ratings are for usability and help people easily find your gig. So, yes, the search provides free promotion, if that's what you want to call it. They probably wouldn't have put it on the site if it was pointless? The concept of capitalism is exponential growth. If you cater just to the top 5% and ignore everyone else, then I guarantee you there will be big problems down the line.
BTW, I was told by their support it was in fact a bug.
