First VPS remote desktop?

I would like to have various accounts at a certain well known auction site to trade surplus hobby items.
I am a basic user in most regards to networking and am facing a steep learning curve.

I have a VPS setup and I can log in and access it, I need to setup a remote desktop on said VPS.
I would rather use a Linux machine and have Bodhi installed on old laptop.
I have discovered Remmina remote desktop client which is supposed to be good, I need a GUI.
Apparently I need to set up port forwarding on the DSL router without exposing my network to the internet.
I think I need to know some more settings to get this all to work, can somone please advise what to do next?
