I am a cryptocoin enthusiast and yesterday i came upon the first scientific cryptocoin. In bitcoin and litcoin mining the decryption is done just for the sake of decoding blocks and obtaining coins. But all the power that used does not really contribute in any meaningful way to society, yet. Now a new concept has been invented that pairs the mining of coins with BOINC. So now while you are mining coins, you get extra reward based on how much computational power you are providing to the BOINC clients. So imagine if a portion of the mining resources that are now used in cryptocurencies such as Bitcoin and Litecoin are directed towards Gridcoin, we can have some major scientific breakthroughs in all scientific fields. This can really change the world. This coin is very new and there are plenty of opportunities to get in on the ground floor. This is the first coin of it's kind! I have a relative that has cancer and I know many other people that are in the same boat. So for me personally this is a great way to to really contribute to medical research. Please spread the word as this concept can really change the world for the better. And yes I am mining it with all I got right now! :)

    What is BOINC?

Similar to Folding@Home, BOINC (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing), is an open-source computing grid where scientists, universities, and companies can create their own projects to host on the client and have volunteers contribute processing power. BOINC takes unused clock cycles from your CPU and, depending on what platforms a particular project is coded in, your Nvidia and AMD graphics cards.

    P.S.

If you like the cause, but do not want to mine or get involved too much you can contribute in another way. In order for a cryptocoin to get traction and be widely accepted, it needs to get on an exchange. If you want to make a small contribution you can sign a petition to get Gridcoin listed on the "Cryptsy". Cryptsy is an exchange where all kinds of cryptocoins are traded. It would be of great help if you can open an acc there are sign the petition to show your support for this coin.

There is a lot of suffering in the world as a result of all kinds of illnesses and now we can use all of our computer power to pitch in and aid medical and scientific breakthroughs. Those universities can sure use out help I think and it the process we can be rewarded too.

The difficulties is still very low right now so you can mint some nice coins with an average GPU. There are some great projects you can choose in BOINC from different scientific fields. So you can choose where you want to contribute some of your resources. It is win win for everyone.

I must agree with W130SN, a site that is only 11 days old can't be trusted right off.

For now I would suggest to stay very far away unless you have spare money that
can be thrown away into scammers hands.

This Gridcoin uses the scrypt algorithm, which is what Lightcoin uses. Bitcoin uses SHA which is different. I understand there is a lot of skepticism, but if you do some research and get familiar with the crypto currencies and how they work you will see the value in this.

OK, OP I will take your word for it.

It seems like a good idea but at this stage it is too early to tell.

Anyway, if anybody is doing this, then you can claim 20 GRC per person from here : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=324341.0

I apologise if I jumped the gun a little but like I say, it seems way too early to see how legit it is.
